Lately I touched more PHP than felixker.com. (Notice that I blog less!)
I’ll keep this entry short and simple since it’s 12am and I should be in bed by now.
Some in-built functions I found very useful.
urlencode
This is a must-use function if you’re going to use query strings ($_GET) to pass variable to another page! Remember to use urldecode when using the variable!
Example:
$string = “i have a cute & tiny dog!”
header(”Location: http://felixker.com/foo?bar=));
htmlentities
Wonderful function to use if you’ve got a page with form submission. Prevents users from playing tricks!
Example:
$str = “A ‘quote’ is <b>bold</b>”;
// Outputs: A ‘quote’ is <b>bold</b>
echo htmlentities($str);
Conclusion
I must end this entry. I need to sleep.
There are many more functions I used, but I just cannot remember them. Most of them are functions that I cannot find built into VB.net. (Correct me if I’m wrong.)
Good night.

There’s a hell load of people in this Internet community asking why is their torrent file downloading at such a slow speed despite having a 6mbps Internet. Inspired by BlueJar’s How-To Group Writing Project I’m writing this “How-To” entry to help you speed up your torrent downloads.
Before we actually start with configuring to speed up, there are several things you have to know.
- Internet speed. Don’t be confused by the speed you are connected from your LAN (Ethernet) port to your modem/router. That is NOT your Internet speed. Look at the package you subscribed with your Internet Service Provider (ISPs). You should be able to know the speed. Example will be: 5mbps download / 512kbps upload. (Note the ‘mbps’/'kbps’ - the ‘b’ in small letters actually means bits and not bytes.)
- Router? Are you using a router? If you are, you probably have to know the model of your router and forward the port correctly. [We'll be covering this at a later part]
- Firewall. Remember to allow the port that you’re going to set later on.
- Your favourite bittorrent client. There are so many programs released in the market. But which is your favourite? Choose your favourite and let’s go! (Note that I’m only showing screenshots for BitComet & uTorrent.)
- Seeds. The number of seeds that’s actually seeding the torrent; the more the merrier. If there are many torrents for a particular download you’re interested in, be sure you get the right one. [Refer to screenshot]

- I think that’s all you need to know to start speeding up. Fire your favourite torrent client and let’s go!
I must mention that downloading of copyrighted materials is illegal. Happy downloading!

Sad to say, the news site is down and I cannot read anything. Refer to screenshot!

Anyone faced the same problem?

Today, the 999th spam was caught by Akismet.
Akismet is a wonderful anti-spamming plug-in that learns what is considered spam and what isn’t. Best of all, it supports almost any application with submitted content including contact forms, forums, wiki & blog.
Ever since I start let Akismet filter my blog’s comments & trackbacks, I saved myself lots of time having to delete them myself. However, there were times that Akismet failed to recognize spam messages that were considered new,  but I sent them back to the moderation queue for another round of spam check (and they were eradicated). Heh, Akismet learns fast!
Currently I’m not getting enough from my sponsors to get myself a pro-blogger API key, but I hope in the near future I can contribute to the development of Akismet.
Great job, Automattic! Automattic has great reputation on the net for developing other projects such as Wordpress, bbPress, Sidebar Widgets for Wordpress, etc!
Once again, thanks Akismet!

Yesterday (26th June 2007, US time) was the Day Of Silence for thousands of webcasters in the US. I tuned into 1.fm’s Top 40 online radio but the same lines were repeated for at least 30 minutes and that was when I found out that today (yesterday) is “Day Of Silence”!
On Tuesday, June 26, thousands of U.S.-based webcasters plan to turn off the music and go silent in a unified effort to draw attention to an impending royalty rate increase that, if implemented, would lead to the virtual shutdown of this country’s Internet radio industry.
“Silence” may occur if extremely-high royalty rates are going to be charged. Most webcasters will go bankrupt if there’s a royalty hike. It’s that bad! I don’t think there’s anything much I can do coz I’m not in the states. But bloggers, please spread the word and let the whole world know. Don’t let music die!

How to help?
