How to Speed up your Torrent downloads
BitComet -Â [Download]Â
I’m actually using BitComet right now. I started using this long ago, switched around and it’s still my choice. The latest build comes with an inbuilt http/ftp download manager too! Most importantly, it doesn’t lag my Windows XP at all [not that other clients lag me].
Above is the screenshot of BitComet’s main window. You must see the green light and “WAN: <Your IP>” to get optimized speeds! If you see a yellow/grey light, you’re probably not getting good speeds.
Configuration
- Global Max Download Rate - Use torrent speed calculator to calculate.
- Global Max Upload Rate - Use torrent speed calculator to calculate.
- Max Simultaneous download tasks number - It’s actually personal preference. I prefer to put it at around 3-6 so my speeds won’t be too low per task. *Suggested value: 5-10
- Listen port - If you are behind a router/firewall, you have to configure your firewall/router to open the port value. If you’re using a router and don’t know how to forward your port, refer to this page. If you’re using a firewall, do figure this out yourself (Read help/faq for firewall). *Suggested value: 60000-65000 (Less Internet traffic rely on these ports, so it’s good to use them.)
- Untick Enable DHT Network. Unless the torrent task you’re downloading has no seeds at all, probably you can try this. But most likely it doesn’t help It’ll just slow down your download speed. So UNTICK it.
- Tick Enable NAT/Firewall configuration in ICS/ICF (Windows XP Only). I remember there are people using ICS. No harm having it ticked.
- Tick Enable UPnP port mapping. (Windows XP only). If you’re using a router that supports UPnP, go ahead and enable it. Even if you don’t, no harm keeping it ticked.
- Maximum connections per task. *Sugested value: 50-100.
- Global Maximum Connections. *Suggested value: 200-400 (Depending on how many maximum simultaneous torrent tasks you’ve set. More tasks will require more connections.)
- Max Simultaneous Half-Open TCP connections. *Suggested value: 10-30
- Protocol encryption (avoid BT protocol blocked). Choose ”Always“. Unless you’re having difficulties downloading a torrent that has only a few seeds and no one’s seeding you after 1 night, don’t go for other options. Many ISPs blocked torrents, so it’ll be good if you encrypt the data.
If you’ve set a high value for Screenshot 2 Setting #6 (Max Simultaneous Half-Open TCP connections), you’ll probably need to change the “New Half-Open Limit“. I set it to 33 to experiment with my Internet and Operating System. *Suggested value: 40-50
* Suggested values are experimented values. Set the experimented values according to your Internet speed and your PC/laptop’s specifications. Stick to the values in the screenshot if you’re afraid. That’ll be safe.

Torrents aren’t as safe as they used to be. I’ve hear lots of people recently are getting caught downloading popular movies.
