BitComet – [Download]

I’m actually using BitComet right now. I started using this long ago, switched around and it’s still my choice. The latest build comes with an inbuilt http/ftp download manager too! Most importantly, it doesn’t lag my Windows XP at all [not that other clients lag me].

Above is the screenshot of BitComet’s main window. You must see the green light and “WAN: <Your IP>” to get optimized speeds! If you see a yellow/grey light, you’re probably not getting good speeds.

Configuration

bitcomet-settings-1.png

  1. Global Max Download Rate – Use torrent speed calculator to calculate.
  2. Global Max Upload Rate – Use torrent speed calculator to calculate.
  3. Max Simultaneous download tasks number – It’s actually personal preference. I prefer to put it at around 3-6 so my speeds won’t be too low per task. *Suggested value: 5-10
  4. Listen port – If you are behind a router/firewall, you have to configure your firewall/router to open the port value. If you’re using a router and don’t know how to forward your port, refer to this page. If you’re using a firewall, do figure this out yourself (Read help/faq for firewall). *Suggested value: 60000-65000 (Less Internet traffic rely on these ports, so it’s good to use them.)

bitcomet-settings-22.png

  1. Untick Enable DHT Network. Unless the torrent task you’re downloading has no seeds at all, probably you can try this. But most likely it doesn’t help It’ll just slow down your download speed. So UNTICK it.
  2. Tick Enable NAT/Firewall configuration in ICS/ICF (Windows XP Only). I remember there are people using ICS. No harm having it ticked.
  3. Tick Enable UPnP port mapping. (Windows XP only). If you’re using a router that supports UPnP, go ahead and enable it. Even if you don’t, no harm keeping it ticked.
  4. Maximum connections per task. *Sugested value: 50-100.
  5. Global Maximum Connections. *Suggested value: 200-400 (Depending on how many maximum simultaneous torrent tasks you’ve set. More tasks will require more connections.)
  6. Max Simultaneous Half-Open TCP connections. *Suggested value: 10-30
  7. Protocol encryption (avoid BT protocol blocked). Choose “Always“. Unless you’re having difficulties downloading a torrent that has only a few seeds and no one’s seeding you after 1 night, don’t go for other options. Many ISPs blocked torrents, so it’ll be good if you encrypt the data.

bitcomet-settings-3.png

If you’ve set a high value for Screenshot 2 Setting #6 (Max Simultaneous Half-Open TCP connections), you’ll probably need to change the “New Half-Open Limit“. I set it to 33 to experiment with my Internet and Operating System. *Suggested value: 40-50

* Suggested values are experimented values. Set the experimented values according to your Internet speed and your PC/laptop’s specifications. Stick to the values in the screenshot if you’re afraid. That’ll be safe.

This guide is very detailed, thumbs up to the one who made this. Pretty sure he must have put in a lot of effort to compile this data. However, for those who hate browsing over multiple-part tutorial, here I found a more simplified version of the information explained above. http://www.speedypc.org/how-to-speed-up-torrent-downloads.html
basically, we just need to open more ports for utorrent downloads to speed up traffic. Torrents use ports 6881 to 6999. If port 6881 is blocked, it will knock on other ports and see if they’re open for use. Keeping these ports open can speed up downloads plus you also need to make sure that the firewall settings are not intefering with this open torrent port.

More trackers, more trackers mean more seeds and thus more speed. Go to http://torrents.iza.co.za/tracker_finder.php to find more trackers for any torrent. (A fault with the form there is that you can’t hit enter on your keyboard, you must click on the find button)

You can also calculate optimal settings that will speed up your client with their speed calculator at http://torrents.iza.co.za/speed_calc.php

There is also some other tips on speeding up your torrent as well as tutorials about creating torrents etc.
