Whole Story: City Harvest Church Singapore

City Harvest Church Worshipping

Wondering what’s happening? Everyone’s discussing this. Just this morning, there was a mini discussion with the public calling in to share their views.

Here’s what I’ve gathered:

  • City Harvest purchased a S$310 million stake in Suntec City Convention Centre. Singaporeans who questioned if registered charities should be allowed to go into business and if the income collected by CHC through its Suntec rentals would be taxed.
  • Members of the church are being investigated for the misuse of funds. The Office of the Commissioner of Charities (COC) and the Commercial Affairs Department (CAD) is looking into some financial transactions involving several individuals and companies related or connected to the church.

    31 May 2010
    – 17 people (including Kong Hee) was ‘picked up’ to assist with investigations. Financial records and computers were taken away from home and offices of the people involved.
  • Singapore’s City Harvest Church founder Kong Hee and wife Ho Yeow Sun owns two companies. One is International Harvest, which according to company records is a provider of corporate training services and motivational courses. Another is Skin Couture, a fashion company with 3 boutiques in Singapore – Ed Hardy at Heeren, Skin at Great World City and Christian Audigier at Ion.
  • According to what I read online, members pay (donate) 10% of their salary and senior members pay 20% or more. Someone please verify this.
  • Earlier this year - Kong Hee is now being accused of plagiarism in his books and website. He copied two author’s’ works without due credit in two books he published – Renewing Your Spiritual Enegery in 90 Days’ Volumes I and II.

12 Jun 2010 – Kong Hee used materials from Leadership Bible, written by three Americans, without crediting any source. StraitsTimes

The Church

  • Has over 32,000 members.
  • Has 14,000 sq foot office in Suntec and its own SGD$47 million building in Jurong West.
  • Has 45 affiliate churches in Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan and Australia with a total of 48,000 members.
  • Employs 154 full-time staff and has 15 committees overseeing all its operations.
  • Spent SGD$40 million in the last financial year.
  • The church has SGD$103 million in reserves – 2009’s audit

Ho Yeow Sun

  • Rents a mansion in Hollywood Hills for S$28,000 a month. Source
  • Last album released – Fancy Free EP (2009-11-16). Sales values of EP unknown.

The above is what I’ve tabulated.

Some say the church is going down, some say that there will still be loyal churchgoers. Now it’s your turn to share with us what you have and know and your thoughts.

Any business link between Harvest Auto (Skoda car distributor) & City Harvest Church? I know that the MD Daniel Au is a church member there.

When the church is harvesting so much money every month, not everyone can pass the temptations of what you can do with the money… turning stones to bread, angels ensuring you would never crash to the ground, plus all the lavishing possessions of the world..

As the money has been contributed willingly by the members internally, the church has the right to decide how the organisation can spend it. However, the intentional transferring of funds around to ficticious institutions is dubious.

I am utterly disappointed and saddened by the arrest. Let God be the Judge.

To both Paul and Alice – My prayers our with and for Christ’s Kingdom-Building churches all over the world. May God be with you and every true believer. Amen.

  • Paul Vincent

God bless you for the chance you have created for others to enlightened. The Holy Spirit is the owner of the church and should be consulted first before talking about his church. Also, the devil wants the church destroyed. So we ought to pray for the church and not tearing apart. The world is seeing and listening. 2 Sam 1:20

    • Alice

What is truth will remain standing, what is not of God will be torn down. Everything will be exposed. If the deeds are done in the light, it will stand through time and be justified. So Paul, you don’t have to worry.

    Long Life CHC. Amen

    1. $310 million is for the 8 items in the NDA. The direct stake in Suntec is about $20 million only and represents a minority stake in the $210 million stake by the consortium which holds 80% of Suntec City Convention Centre. This has been clarified by ARA Asset Management in the chinese newspapers. CHC has yet to raise the remainder $245 million required for the remaining requirements of the NDA.

    2. The $103 million reserves consist of $64.9 million in the building fund and the rest is cash and other items in their financial statement.

Out of that $64.9 million, part of it has been used up to buy the stake in Suntec and $46.3 million has been given to licensor just to simply look for a place of worship. So effectively, the building fund has been zeroed. Hence the reserve only left the cash in bank.

    3. A church member revealed that the actual attendance of the Church as of Sep 2010 is just 14,801. So, the 32,000 figure is in doubt. Take note this represents attendance and not actual members.

      Dear David,

In future, please do not solicit church matters and ministries through blogs. This web site is not a church. And churches and ministries are getting bad reputations for squandering funds and other money meant to help the poor and needy.
If you are seeking for opportunities to minister in Singapore, please seek the Lord and ask God to grant you open doors.
Personally I have seen many letters from Indian (India) ministers and African churches who write in randomly to solicit opportunities for contacts and open doors to preach (and collect money). I usually ignore such letters.

      Humbly,
      you sis-in-Christ
      Alice

Wow! That’s an eye opener. I went for one such gathering and enjoyed the prayer meet. But most of the time, I went out with friends to absorb the sights and sounds of Singapore and then came back to relax at one of the best discount hotels in Singapore.

I’d appreciate if you could share how the church was set up. :)

yes, members are encouraged (and expected) to tithe, and this is typically 10% of ur monthly salary (even students who don’t have income are encouraged to tithe, n contribute 10% of their monthly allowance). also, 10% includes ur annual bonus, AWS, performance bonus, incentives, etc. and don’t cheat. god is watching. :P
